Owning a recreational vehicle is a rewarding experience since it offers you the freedom to travel at your whim, knowing that you’ve got your accommodations all sorted out. However, in order to be able to use your RV, you’ve got to keep it in good working order! Here are some of our best tips and tricks for maintaining your RV so that it’s ready for all your travels.

Perform an Inspection

Start by walking around the exterior and walking through the interior of your RV to see what might need fixing. On the outside, you’ll want to look for signs of damage or dents, broken parts or jammed locks. Inside the RV, you should check slide-outs as well as all your appliances. Look for any sign of leaks or water damage, as this could indicate a problem with your plumbing system. Note down what you need to address so that you have a to-do list when you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Check Your Tires

The tires of your RV hold up the entire weight of the vehicle, its passengers and all the cargo, so you’ll want to ensure they’re in good shape. Use a tire pressure gauge like the one in your car’s glovebox to check the pressure on each tire and compare this to the levels recommended in your owner’s manual. Air them up with an air compressor and while you do, check for signs of damage like cracks in the sidewalls, low pressure spots, uneven tread wear and embedded objects. After all, you never want to ride on bad tires!

Lubricate Moving Parts

The seals, slide-outs, doors and windows of your RV all need to have their seals and moving parts inspected and lubricated. This will help ensure that they function properly when you need them to, rather than getting stuck or drying out and allowing cold or hot air in. Use a silicone-based lubricant to keep everything moving smoothly.

Engine Checks

If your RV has an engine, you’ll need to maintain it similarly to how your car’s engine is maintained. This means checking the oil and changing it when it’s sludgy, filling up the coolant, inspecting spark plugs, ensuring that the engine runs smoothly, and that you don’t hear any strange noises.
